CoSV webinar series: Shallow subaqueous and subglacial explosive eruptions
On September 6th, 2023, 16:00 UTC, CoSV hosted the webinar entitled “Shallow subaqueous and subglacial explosive eruptions: Comparing models and case studies to explore controls on column rise and stratospheric injection”. This webinar was presented by Dr. Colin Rowell, Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, University of British Columbia, Canada.

Abstract:
I’ll explore a model of shallow hydromagmatic eruptions up to about 500 m of water depth, with an eye towards critical controls on the rise and climate impacts of the resulting eruption columns. I’ll discuss aspects of magma energy budget, external water entrainment and mixing, and fragmentation and fine ash production, adding context with a few key observations from real eruptions. To explore these concepts a little further, I’ll close with a thought experiment on the energy balance and driving mechanisms of the 2022 Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Ha’apai eruption column.
