Abstract:

During the 2018 eruption of Kīlauea volcano, over half the erupted lava was deposited on the seafloor. As the lava entered the sea, it generated sounds that were recorded by a network of hydrophones deployed offshore. We compare hydroacoustic data with transmission loss models and eruption photographs to show that visible activity at the coastline was poorly recorded by the hydrophone network. Instead the acoustic signals were generated by lava flowing up to 100s of meters offshore, with implications for flank growth and edifice stability.
